January 12-18, 2004. Visited North Carolina including various sites in the Asheville, Greensboro and Yadkin Valley areas. Yadkin Valley would be the idea location, as it was most recently the first area in North Carolina to be established as a formal appellation with the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms..
January 26, 2004. My time in NC was great! I ended up purchasing a home in State Road, NC (near Elkin). The plan is to get settled and become familiar with the region, then perhaps in the spring of 2005, purchase a big chunk of land for the vineyard and winery. To keep up to date, please visit www.greatncwines.com for more information!
August 11, 2004. Purchased an additional two acres, will begin clearing this fall and planting with V. Vinifera in Spring 2005! For more pictures please visit our online photo album.
June 16, 2005. Planted an additional 750+ vines including Barbera, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Carmenere and Merlot. I also got engaged in October of 2004 and planning a October 8th, 2005 wedding. Turns out grapes are a LOT of work and so is paying for and planning a wedding. Pushing back plans to purchase additional acreage till possible Spring 2006. However, I will plant another 200 or so vines in the spring of 2006 as I have some Pinotage that will be ready for planting in the spring of 2006!
The Yadkin Valley Appellation (YVA) consists of 2,212 square miles (1,416,600 acres) that are significantly different from areas to the north, south, east and west in soils, rainfall, temperatures and hardiness and justify designation as a unique grape growing appellation. The YVA covers all of Wilkes, Surry, Yadkin and parts of Stokes, Forsyth, Davie and Davidson counties as defined by most of the upper Yadkin valley drainage basin. Communities in the YVA include Advance, Boomer, Booneville, Clemmons, Dobson, Elkin, Jonesville, King, Lewisville, Lexington, Mocksville, Mount Airy, North Wilkesboro, Pilot Mountain, Pinnacle, Ronda, Wilkesboro, Winston-Salem, and Yadkinville. Interstates 40, 74 and 77 run through the YVA, and over ten million people live with an eight hour drive of the Yadkin Valley.
